Department of Art

Study art in a community of creative learners.

About the Department

Located in state-of-the-art facilities in the historic riverfront area of the vibrant city of Columbus, the Department of Art offers rigorous programs of study that guide students toward becoming creative professionals in their field in Studio Art, Art Education, Graphic Design, Animation, or Art History. Students in Studio Art choose a focus in Book Arts and Printmaking, Ceramics, Narrative Illustration, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Sculpture and Expanded Media, Animation, or Graphic Design. Visiting artists and scholars are regularly in residence and lead workshops or teach courses in topics related to their artistic and scholarly work. Everything that is offered in the Department -- a rich selection of courses, exhibitions, in-depth critiques, workshops and lectures – is orchestrated to expose our gifted students to an incredibly rich array of different perspectives and creates an intense environment designed to foster future, successful careers for our graduates. The Department has earned full professional accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

I feel lucky to attend CSU and to be a part of the Art Department. The access to facilities is phenomenal and allows for further exploration of projects and associated materials. You can cultivate an experience that allows for the exploration of topics that you are interested in, in a medium you love.

Learn From the Best

The Department of Art is home to many accomplished faculty members. Several are highly regarded as experts and have been recognized with notable honors and awards. Thanks to a low student-to-faculty ratio, you'll be sure to receive an excellent education in our art degree programs.

The Art Education Experiential Learning Lab - The Art Education Experiential Learning Lab provides a stimulating environment in which undergraduate Art Education majors can develop and pilot lessons of their own design to gain valuable pre-service teaching experience.

Events

All-State Art Symposium - The annual All-State Art Symposium is dedicated to promoting and recognizing the creative talents of high school students from Georgia's school districts. The symposium's workshops, juried exhibition and other events provide high school students with cultural opportunities, develop advanced studio skills, and cultivate aesthetic appreciation while recognizing excellence in high school art education.

Art Throw Down Invitational - The Columbus State Art Department is proud to host the second annual High School Art Throw Down Invitational. Select your best and brightest art students to compete in the second annual Art Throw Down Invitational and be part of history as they compete in various categories ranging from two and three dimensional media to animation and graphic design.

Bo Bartlett Center - The Bartlett Center at Columbus State University is a dynamic, creative learning laboratory that is part gallery/museum, part experimental arts incubator, and part community center. Based on the belief that art can change lives, the Center has a two-fold mission: community outreach programs and a national mission to provide innovative exhibitions that deepens our understanding of art.
