Dr. Tyo is currently serving in the role of COEHP Director of Graduate Studies and has taught over 20 different courses (graduate and undergraduate) while at CSU including Exercise Physiology, Exercise Prescription for Special Populations, and Nutritional Bases for Human Performance. He earned his Bachelor of Science (1999) in Health Fitness in Preventative and Rehabilitative Programs and a Master of Arts (2001) in Exercise Physiology from Central Michigan University. Following a successful 6-year career in orthopedic implant sales, Dr. Tyo earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

His main research interest involves objective monitors of physical activity and sedentary behavior in various populations including adults, children, and other underrepresented groups. Dr. Tyo has studied the effects of adiposity on the accuracy of pedometers and accelerometers. He has worked to validate new devices in lab-based and free-living conditions. In addition, he is interested in fitness and body composition changes of athletes during their competition year and in developing and validating different methods of estimating body composition in various populations through simple anthropometrics.
