Columbus Youth Percussion Ensemble

Dr. Paul Vaillancourt and the Schwob School of Music are initiating a regional youth percussion ensemble-intensive program for middle and high school students. Students will have a chance to develop their technique, reading, musical literacy and communication skills in an ensemble-focused environment. The group will share the stage with the Schwob Percussion Ensemble and Studio in end of semester concerts and recitals.

Dates
- Audition date: Tuesday, January 27, 7-9pm
- First rehearsal: (Tuesdays, 7-9pm)
- February 3, 10, 17, 24
- March 3, 17, 24, 31
- April 7
- Spring Concert
- Saturday, April 11, 7:30pm
- Dress rehearsal, 4-6pm, Legacy Hall
Audition Materials
- Any short solo work for snare drum
- Any short work or excerpt for mallets AND/OR all-state scales (All-State pieces or equivalent would be appropriate)
There will be sight reading on mallets and snare drum at the audition.
Goals
- Give students from the Greater Columbus area an opportunity to have an intensive ensemble-focused experience, comparable to that of groups in and around Atlanta such as the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and Atlanta Youth Percussion Ensemble
- Work intensively with Dr. V and grad students in a curricular/pedagogy-focused program
- Develop a regional culture of musical proficiency and excellence in concert percussion
- Provide students with ensemble strategies and techniques that could be incorporated into their own band programs.
*students must be enrolled in a school music program to participate
Registration and Fees
- $150 per student per semester (covers all instruments/music/instruction)
- Includes 10 rehearsals/weekly sessions: every Tuesday from February 3 to April 11, in addition to the dress rehearsal and concert on Sat. April 11.
- Due at the First rehearsal: Tuesday, Feb. 3 - 7pm
Additional expenses:
Students might be asked to purchase mallets needed for specific repertoire, keeping
in mind that these sticks/mallets could also be used for school, All-State, GHP, college-level
repertoire.
