Biography
Dr. Brown teaches six graduate-level courses in Curriculum and Instruction and Accomplished Teaching within the College of Education and Health Professions at Columbus State University each year. His teaching responsibilities include facilitating courses such as Curriculum Design for Student Achievement, Literacy and Learning Strategies Across the Curriculum, Knowledge of Students and Their Learning, and Multicultural Studies Across the Curriculum. His approach to teaching is grounded in the belief that great educators design both learning and culture. Drawing on years of experience in K–12 leadership, curriculum development, and the performing arts, Dr. Brown helps teachers connect instructional theory with the lived experience of students. He emphasizes activating prior knowledge, authenticity, collaboration, and reflection — equipping educators to create meaningful, equitable, and high-performing learning environments.Dr. Brown’s research and professional practice focus on how leadership, instructional design, and culture intersect to improve learning across complex educational systems. For the past five years, he has served the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education superintendent’s cabinet, directly supporting Assistant Superintendents in the Office of Information Technology Services and the Office of Student Support Services. In that capacity, he has led statewide initiatives in modernizing student data systems, accessibility, and program evaluation — work that reflects his ongoing interest in equity-driven leadership and sustainable improvement in public education.
In addition to his state-level leadership and academic research, Dr. Brown maintains an active professional presence as an adjudicator, clinician, and consultant. Through his work with Drum Corps International, Music for All, Bands of America, the Michigan Competing Band Association, the Wisconsin School Music Association, the Western Band Association, and other state and international organizations, he applies expertise in instructional design, performance psychology, and criteria-based feedback to help educators and students celebrate excellence and refine their craft. These roles extend his scholarship into authentic learning environments, connecting data-informed leadership with artistry, motivation, and high performance.
Across these roles, Dr. Brown utilizes a structured evaluative process of impression, analysis, and comparison, guided by delineated rubrics and performance criteria. This approach emphasizes clear communication, growth-oriented feedback, and the development of reflective practice among performers and educators alike.
Dr. Brown has held teaching and administrator roles in Alabama, Georgia, California, and Hawaii. A recent sample of schools and organizations that Dr. Brown has supported through adjudication, professional development, and instructional consultation is available upon request.
