Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: EDCI 3455. Characteristics of written language among adolescents. In a workshop setting, the design of writing experiences consistent with contemporary research and theory. Techniques of evaluation.

EDSE 3145 Introduction to Social Science Education in Grades 7-12 - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: EDCI 3455. Historical perspectives, perceptions, ideologies, and approaches to social science education. Emphasis on trends, issues, curriculum and standards, as well as the disciplines which shape social studies instruction and learning.

EDSE 4115 Teaching English Language Arts in Grades 7-12 - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education, EDCI 3455, and EDUT 3215; Co-requisite: EDCI 4455. Planning skills, implementing strategies, selection of materials, and assessment of learning for English language arts, grades 7-12. Infusion of technology.

EDSE 4117 Literature for Adolescents - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Junior standing; Co-requisite: EDSE 3115. An evaluative survey of literature written for adolescent readers with an emphasis on response theory; selection and use of fiction/non-fiction, and poetry; and pedagogy appropriate to grade 5-12.

EDSE 4125 Teaching a Modern Foreign Language - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education. Consideration of objective, subject matter, materials, classroom instructional procedures, pupil experiences and evaluative procedures for foreign language classes in grades K-12. Organization of courses and programs in modern language education.

EDSE 4126 Topics in Foreign Language Methodology - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education. This course is intended primarily to provide a forum for future instructors of foreign language/cultures/literatures to engage intellectually with the essential issues in language methodology and second language acquisition. It is the objective of this course to prepare the students in the foreign language education major for reflective teaching and to equip them with the necessary critical perspectives on language learning.

EDSE 4135 Curriculum and Methods in Secondary Science - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: EDCI 4455. Lesson and unit planning, curriculum design, implementation strategies, and selection of materials for secondary science. Emphasis on science processes and recommendations from national curriculum movements.

EDSE 4225 Curriculum and Methods in Secondary Mathematics - (4-4-6)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education, EDSE 2225, and 18 hours of required MATH courses. Curriculum and methods including resources, tool and strategies for teaching secondary mathematics. Emphasis on 9-12 mathematics.

EDSE 4245 Teaching Social Studies in Grades 7-12 - (2-2-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education, EDSE 3145, and EDCI 3455; Co-requisite: EDCI 4455. Applied methodology, philosophy, and objectives of the social studies from theory to practice. In depth study of concept formation, skill development, methods, techniques, strategies and assessment. Emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, field standards, current practices, diversity and technology.

EDSE 5117 Reading in the Secondary Content Areas - (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education or departmental approval. Teaching strategies and selection of materials in the student's teaching field.

EDSE 6115 Trends in Adolescent Literature - (3-0-3)
Advanced study of young adult literature with emphasis on research, recent publications, and prominent writers. Multicultural/global perspectives and technological emphasis.

EDSE 6117 Improved Teaching of English Language Arts, Grades 4-8 - (3-0-3)
A refinement of knowledge and skills for teaching the English language arts in secondary schools. Review of curriculum trends and innovations, including NCTE/IRA Standards.

EDSE 6125 Teaching Mathematics in Secondary School - (3-0-3)
An advanced examination of teaching strategies, assessment techniques, curriculum, and resources for the purpose of developing expertise in providing sound mathematics instruction for secondary students.

EDSE 6135 Teaching Science in the Secondary School - (3-0-3)
Advanced study of curriculum and instruction as related to current practices in science education. Emphasis on methodology, material selection, and the investigative approach to teaching science.

An in-depth examination of current as well as past issues related to the mathematics education of secondary students.

EDSE 7135 Curriculum Studies in Secondary Science Education - (3-0-3)
Advanced concepts and trends in science curriculum theory and design. National and state curriculum projects and their influence.

EDSE 7145 Curriculum Studies in Social Science Education - (3-0-3)
Historical and current reform, questions and positions, conceptual themes, phenomenological themes and contemporary problems of the social studies. Emphasis on resources and the application of research.
