Out-of-State Employment
Ensure you have reviewed all information on this page PRIOR TO extending any offer of employment or approve any arrangements for current employees working outside the state of Georgia.
General Guidelines
Columbus State University (CSU) is an employer of the State of Georgia and a public institution. Limited out-of-state work arrangements may become necessary when the position and/or duties are essential and critical to the teaching and research mission and cannot be met by a CSU employee or candidate within the state of Georgia.
Approval from Human Resources must be obtained in advance of an offer being made to the candidate. Employment laws and payroll tax regulations vary significantly by state. Specific tax laws and employment considerations must be arranged to avoid institutional and individual penalties. Applicable fees with states and/or countries will be charged to the unit.
This process is mandatory when hiring new employees or for current employees that are relocating outside of the state of Georgia. This process does not cover employment for those living and working in a country outside the US.
The hiring department should submit a fully signed Out-of-State Employee Request Form at least eight (8) weeks before the proposed effective date.
Who are out-of-state employees?
- Out-of-State workers are Employees that both reside and work at a location outside of Georgia.
- Current employees who request or have a need to relocate temporarily or on an ongoing basis to work outside of Georgia that supports the mission of CSU.
Next steps:

Please be aware if approved, necessary arrangements with states and/or counties can take up to 8 weeks or more to establish. The team is actively reviewing these requests on a first-come, first-served basis.
- For approved requests, Telework Agreements must be submitted and renewed annually.
Review Process
The out-of-state employee request form will be routed and signed by the candidate/employee’s department chair, HR Liaison, and their Vice President or Designee.
