Biography

Claire McCoy, Ph.D., brings the history of art to local, national, and international audiences. She is the William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Endowed Chair in Art History at Columbus State University, where she teaches courses in European art and visual culture. Previously she taught at Longwood University where she received Maria Bristow Starke Faculty Excellence Award for Outstanding Teaching and Research and served as Director of General Education.

Dr. McCoy’s research focuses on nineteenth-century European art and art criticism. Internationally recognized for her exploration of the role Renaissance art played in the construction of public artistic identities for French artists such as Auguste Rodin, Dr. McCoy’s work appears in scholarly journals such as Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide and Prism(s). She is also a frequent speaker to both academic and general audiences.

Dr. McCoy is a contributing scholar and author for Smarthistory, where her essays and teaching materials make art-historical research accessible to a global audience. Her Smarthistory work includes essays on Jacques-Louis David’s Oath of the Horatii and Gustave Courbet’s A Burial at Ornans. Through this work, her scholarship reaches far beyond the university classroom and traditional academic publications.
