Historical Note

The Brownville-Summerville Commercial District in Phenix City, Alabama encompasses two historic areas. One is located near the site of the depot on Railroad Street and has 3 buildings left; the first gas station built in Phenix City, a coal and ice company, and a small grocery store. The second is located on Broad Street and includes the Masonic Lodge, built in 1922, and a few one-story brick commercial structures. The district runs north and south along Broad Street and Summerville Road and continues east and west on Railroad St, including side streets up to four blocks west of Summerville Road. The district encompasses intact streets of residential housing, 2 schools, 2 churches and 2 small commercial areas. The historic district is architecturally significant for its collection of mid-1880s to 1930s commercial and residential structures. This area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, designated as Russell County-#83003479.
