Tornado of 1953 Photographs, SMC 140

Scope and Content

These snapshots were taken in the aftermath of the tornado which struck Columbus, Georgia on April 18 of 1953. This tornado was the worst one to date to ever hit Columbus. These photos show the destruction which occurred in neighborhoods near Johnson Elementary School and Jordan High School. The areas depicted are roughly bounded by Woodruff Road, Hamilton Road, Macon Road and Manchester Expressway. Images include houses, schools and churches in ruins or heavily damaged.
