Bailey George McClellan Civil War Memoir (SMC 109)

Biographical Note

Bailey George McClellan was a member of the 10th Alabama Regiment, Company D during the Civil War. His company was made up of men from Calhoun County, Alabama. Company D was initially called the Alexandria Rifles. They were mustered in on June 11, 1861 in Alexandria, Alabama.

According to his 1911 pension application, McClellan served till 1865, having been wounded and captured at Gettysburg. He was also wounded at Sharpsburg. He was taken as prisoner to Devil's Island in New York where he was paroled in 1863. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant after reenlisting in Hardee's Battalion.

Bailey was born Jan 18, 1840 in Calhoun County, Alabama and married Louisa (Lizzie) Walker on July 10, 1864. The 1880 census lists 4 children: Sam, Ella, George and John. He died March 28, 1925 and is buried in Alexandria, Calhoun County, Alabama.

Scope and Content

This small collection consists of the transcription of the memoirs of Bailey George McClellan entitled "A Personal Account of the 10th Alabama Regiment, Co. D during the Civil War, 1861." The publication date is shown as January 5, 1901. It appears the McClellan originally published his personal account in a newspaper, which has not been identified. The printed transcription is spiral bound.

McClellan gives detailed unit history, including unit movements, organization and living conditions of the soldiers.

Provenance

This small collection came to the CSU Archives in the fall of 2013 when the Columbus Public Library closed its archival collection and donated it to the CSU Archives.
