Formats and Item Types Housed in the CSU Archives

Audio and Video Tape Collection

The Audio and Video Tape Collection consists of audio and video materials in varying formats which are primarily films or musical recordings about Columbus or by Columbusites. Equipment to view or listen to these materials is located in the archives, and these materials do not circulate. The majority of these materials are catalogued and searchable through GIL.

Vertical Files

Vertical Files are clipped which document the history and culture of Columbus.

Periodicals

Periodicals are housed in the Archives on a limited basis. In general, periodicals are housed on the first floor of the library. Exceptions to this rule are materials of historical or cultural importance to the Columbus area. These periodicals are housed in the Archives:

  • Brown's Guide to Georgia
  • Chattahoochee Tracings: Newsletter of the Historic Chattahoochee Commission
  • Columbus and the Valley Magazine
  • Footnotes: Newsletter of the Georgian Historical Society
  • Historic Columbus Foundation Newsletter
  • Industrial Index
  • Journal of the Georgia Association of Historians
  • Linwood Legacy Newsletter
  • Muscogiana
  • Old House Journal
  • Playgrounds

Historical Artifacts

Historical Artifacts are housed in limited numbers in the archives. It should be noted that The Archives at Columbus State University does not actively collect historical artifacts, but does on occasion accept certain types of artifacts as part of larger print collections.

Historical Newspapers

Historical Newspapers which focus on the Columbus area are collected. This collection includes bound volumes of local newspapers, some of which date to the 1830's. Special bound editions of local newspapers and special issue segments which document local history are also collected. The bound volumes of the newspapers are only open to researchers when special circumstances warrant examination of the original. Microfilm copies of Columbus Newspapers are available on the first floor of the library.
