MUSA - Music, Applied

 
Individual instruction is offered in voice, piano, organ, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, string bass, harp, electric bass, guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, horn, tuba, and percussion. Part of the work in applied music consists of attendance at master classes, consisting of the four main instrumental categories (string, woodwind, brass, and percussion), voice, and keyboard in which the teacher can present materials, methods, demonstrations and performances for the benefit of each group.

MUSA 1205. Applied Music for the Non-Music Major (1/2-1-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090. Study on a particular instrument.

MUSA 1210. Basic Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval. Major instrument study on a basic, pre-college level.

MUSA 1211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090.

MUSA 1212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 1211 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090.

MUSA 1215. Secondary Applied Music (1/2-1-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval.

MUSA 1301. Class Voice 1 (0-2-1) Group instruction in the principles of vocal technique and public performance for non-voice majors. Non-voice music majors may substitute this course for the study of a secondary instrument with the approval of their advisors.

MUSA 1302. Class Voice 2 (0-2-1) Prerequisite: MUSA 1301 or THEA 1301. Continuation of MUSA 1301/THEA 1301. Group instruction in the principles of vocal technique and public performance for non-voice majors. Non-voice music majors may substitute this course for the study of a secondary instrument with the approval of their advisors.

MUSA 2211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 1212 and Departmental Approval. Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090.

MUSA 2212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 2211 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090.

MUSA 2313. Keyboard Class 1 (0-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval. Two 50-minute classes weekly. Keyboard application of principles of music theory, harmonization, improvisation, sightreading, use of the keyboard as a rehearsal tool and in the classroom. (MUSA 3000).

MUSA 2314. Keyboard Class 2 (0-2-1) Prerequisite: MUSA 2313 or by permission of the instructor. Two 50-minute classes weekly with focus on successful preparation of the piano proficiency examination.

MUSA 3000. Piano Proficiency (0-0-0) Satisfactory grade in this course indicates completion of a piano proficiency examination for one of the undergraduate degrees in music. (S/U grading).

MUSA 3211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 2212 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 3212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 3211 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 3221. Applied Music (1-4-2) Prerequisites: MUSA 2212 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 3222. Applied Music (1-4-2) Prerequisites: MUSA 3211/3221 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 3305. Half Recital (0-2-1) Co-requisite: MUSA 3211 or higher.

MUSA 4211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 3212/3222 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 4212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 4211/4221/4231 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 4221. Applied Music (1-4-2) Prerequisites: MUSA 3212/3222 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 4222. Applied Music (1-4-2) Prerequisites: MUSP 4211/4221/4231 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 4231. Applied Music (1-6-3) Prerequisites: MUSA 3212/3222 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 4232. Applied Music (1-6-3) Prerequisites: MUSA 4211/4221/4231 and Departmental Approval; Co-requisite: MUSC 1070/1080/1090/3070/3080/3090.

MUSA 4305. Full Recital (0-2-1) Co-requisite: MUSA 4211 or higher.

MUSA 5211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 4212/4222/4232 and Departmental Approval.

MUSA 5212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisites: MUSA 5211/5221/5231 and Departmental Approval.

MUSA 5221. Applied Music (1-4-2) Prerequisites: MUSA 4212/4222/4232 and Departmental Approval.

MUSA 5222. Applied Music (1-4-2) Prerequisites: MUSA 5211/5221/5231 and Departmental Approval.

MUSA 5231. Applied Music (1-6-3) Prerequisites: MUSA 4212/4222/4232 and Departmental Approval.

MUSA 6000. Solo Recital/Chamber Music Recital/Major Presentation (0-0-0) Satisfactory grade indicates satisfaction of required proficiency. (S/U grading.)

MUSA 6211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval.

MUSA 6212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval.

MUSA 6251. Graduate Conducting/Score Analysis 1 (2-10-3) Co-requisite: MUSC 7070/80/90. Addresses and provides practical experience with basic, intermediate, and advanced conducting skills including the application of appropriate rehearsal techniques, conductor score analysis methodologies and historical research as essential components of successful performance.

MUSA 6252. Graduate Conducting/Score Analysis 2 (2-10-3) Prerequisite: MUSA 6251; Co-requisite: MUSC 7070/80/90. Expands skills developed in MUSA 6251, including a primary focus on advanced conducting skills, conductor score analysis, diverse rehearsal techniques and historical research as essential components of successful performance. Development of interview/application materials is also addressed.

MUSA 6253. Graduate Conducting/Score Analysis 3 (1-9-2) Prerequisite: MUSA 6252; Co-requisite: MUSC 7070/80/90. Includes a primary focus on advanced conducting/analysis/research skills in all areas of the conducting profession.

MUSA 6254. Graduate Conducting/Score Analysis 4 (1-9-2) Prerequisite: MUSA 6253; Co-requisite: MUSC 7070/80/90. Includes a primary focus on advanced conducting/analysis/research skills in all areas of the conducting profession, culminating in a final written document and recital.

MUSA 7105. Graduate Lecture Recital (0-2-2) Co-requisite: MUSE 6485. Preparation and public performance of an informative and educational recital that is repertoire-based and includes a lecture presentation. Repertoire must be approved through the applied instructor. (S/U Grading.)

MUSA 7211. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval.

MUSA 7212. Applied Music (1-2-1) Prerequisite: Departmental Approval.
