Biography

Professor Kristie W. Smith, Ph.D. is a long-time middle grades educator and teacher educator. Professor Smith has rich experiences in highly diverse P-12 classroom and district settings, to include serving as a middle and high school teacher of English/language arts, a teacher of English Language Learners in the middle grades, and as a district level middle grades/secondary Literacy Instructional Specialist in the metro Atlanta area.

In her university work, Professor Smith has served as an adjunct for Mercer University, Atlanta in the Tift College of Education and Georgia College and State University’s John H. Lounsbury College of Education. She has held professional appointments at Minnesota State University, Mankato and Gardner-Webb University. Professor Smith is currently serving in the role of Assistant Professor, Middle Grades Teacher Education at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia.

Professor Smith is an active member of the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). She has served as an executive council member of the Middle Level Education Research SIG of AERA since 2020. During her term with the MLER SIG, Professor Smith has been working as co-lead for the Mentoring Initiative and co-editor for the Chronicle (SIG Newsletter). Professor Smith is also currently serving a term as the regional faculty advisor for the Collegiate Middle Level Association, Chapter-at-Large, East.
