GEOL 3266: Mineralogy

GEOL 3266. Mineralogy (3-3-4) Prerequisite: MATH1111, GEOL1121, and GEOL1121L with "C" or better in each course. This course will expose students to fundamentals of mineral formation, identification, and uses, including crystal chemistry, crystallography, crystal structure, and crystal growth. Both physical and optical properties will be explored, and mineral classification schemes will be covered. The course will particularly focus on the identification, classification, and formation of common rock forming, industrial, and diagnostic minerals; although students will be exposed to a wide variety of minerals representative of the major mineral groups. (Course fee required.)
