EDMG - Education, Middle Grades

 
 
EDMG 2257. Instructional Practices in Middle Grades (3-4-5)
An overview of the historical, philosophical and sociological factors which impacted the development of middle level education. Emphasis is upon curriculum development methods and instructional skills appropriate for early middle grades classes. Field experience required as a course component.

EDMG 3115. Teaching Writing in Grades 4-8 (2-0-2) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: EDCI 3455. Characteristics of written language among children in grades 4-8. In a workshop setting, the design of writing experiences consistent with contemporary research and theory. Techniques of evaluation.

EDMG 3116. Reading and Learning Strategies in the Middle Grades (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: EDCI 3455. Models, theories and processes of reading instruction, study skills, and learning strategies. Integrated reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening across curricular areas is emphasized.

EDMG 4121. Teaching Mathematics in the Middle Grades 1 (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education and MATH 2008 with a grade of C or better. Instructional strategies, materials, and lesson planning for middle grades mathematics classes with an emphasis on basic middle grades mathematical concepts; national curriculum recommendations.

EDMG 4222. Teaching Mathematics in the Middle Grades 2 (2-4-4) Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education and EDMG 4121. An exploration of mathematical concepts taught in the upper middle grades; emphasis on concepts of proportional reasoning, integers, and functions. Assessment and unit planning.

EDMG 4235. Teaching Science in the Middle Grades (3-0-4) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Lesson and unit planning, implementation strategies, and selection of materials for middle grades science. Emphasis will be placed on the processes of science and recommendations of national curriculum efforts.

EDMG 4245. Social Studies in the Middle Grades (3-0-4) Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education, EDMG 3156, and EDMG 3116; Co-requisites: EDCI 3455 and EDMG 3115. An overview of the history, philosophy, goals, objectives and curriculum guidelines of the social sciences and social studies. Focus on concept formats, skill development and evaluation and assessment appropriate for the middle grades learner. Special emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, field standards, current practices, diversity and technology.

EDMG 5125. Algebra for Middle Grades Teachers (3-0-3) Fundamental ideas of algebra and the mathematics of change are explored and extended through the use of realistic situations and with the aid of technology (graphing calculators or software, spreadsheets, and symbolic manipulator calculators or software); concepts are explored through graphical, numeral, and symbolic representations.

EDMG 5126. Investigative Geometry and Measurement (4-0-4) Prerequisites: Completion of 9 hours approved MATH courses. Exploration of geometry and measurement topics using a variety of tools, both classical and technological. Course emphasizes content as well as various approaches to learning in this area.

EDMG 6115. Oral Language in the Middle Grades (3-0-3) The role and design of oral language learning strategies for middle-grades learners, both in language arts and other contents. Emphasis on drama, collaborative learning, and discussion, with examination of English dialects.

EDMG 6117. Improved Teaching of English Language Arts in Grades 4-8 (3-0-3) A refinement of knowledge and skills for teaching the English language arts in a middle-level setting. Theme-based teaching, curriculum innovations, NCTE/IRA Standards.

EDMG 6125. Teaching Mathematics in the Middle Grades (3-0-3) An examination of teaching strategies, assessment techniques, curriculum, and resources for sound mathematics instruction for middle grades students.

EDMG 6126. Content Underpinnings for Middle School Mathematics (3-0-3) In-depth study of a content area in middle school mathematics from an advanced view and in a manner modeling current recommendations for teaching mathematics in middle grades. May be taken twice for credit.

EDMG 6135. Teaching Concepts of Physical Science in the Middle Grades (3-0-3) Content selection and teaching methodology in middle grades physical science. Emphasis will be placed on recommendations from national curriculum movements.

EDMG 6136. Teaching Concepts of Life Science in the Middle Grades (3-0-3) Content selection and teaching methodology in middle grades life science. Emphasis will be placed on recommendations from national curriculum movements.

EDMG 6155. Psychology of the Early Adolescent Learner (3-0-3) A focused study of early adolescent development with an emphasis on instructional models that enhance achievement during the middle grades years.

EDMG 7125. Issues in Mathematics Education in Middle Grades (3-0-3) An in-depth examination of current as well as past issues related to the mathematics education of middle school students.
