EDCI - Education, Curriculum and Instruction

 
 
EDCI 2105. Diversity in Education (1-1-1) Course is designed to prepare those entering the field of teaching for the wide diversity of students they will encounter in their classrooms, schools and communities. These include nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, class, language, sexual orientation, and ability levels.

EDCI 3455. Practicum 1 for Middle-Grades and Secondary Education (0-4-2) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: enrollment in methods/curriculum courses determined by major. A field-based course linked to requirements in middle grades or a secondary education program (English, mathematics, science, social studies): emphasis on observation, supervised tutorials, and guided participation in planning, instructing, and assessing student learning.

EDCI 3456. Practicum for Middle-Grades and Secondary Science  (0-6-3) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Designed to provide preservice science teacher candidates with experiences working with middle grades and secondary students by participating in and developing science activities at the Coca Cola Space Science Center, Oxbow Meadows, or other approved sites.

EDCI 4205. InTech: Early Childhood Education Preservice Teachers (1-2-2) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. This course immerses preservice teachers in a technology-rich learning environment to build skills in use of modern technology, integration of QCC objectives, new designs for teaching and learning, classroom management, and enhanced pedagogical practice. Must be taken with a field-based course within the major.

EDCI 4206. InTech: Middle Grades & P-12 Preservice Teachers (1-2-2) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. This course immerses preservice teachers in a technology-rich learning environment to build skills in use of modern technology, integration of QCC objectives, new designs for teaching and learning, classroom management, and enhanced pedagogical practice. Must be taken with a field-based course within the major. 

EDCI 4207. InTech: Secondary Education Preservice Teachers (1-2-2) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. This course immerses preservice teachers in a technology-rich learning environment to build skills in use of modern technology, integration of QCC objectives, new designs for teaching and learning, classroom management, and enhanced pedagogical practice. Must be taken with a field-based course within the major.

EDCI 4455. Practicum 2 for Middle Grades and Secondary Education (0-4-2) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education; Co-requisite: enrollment in selected methods/curriculum courses determined by major. The second of two practica linked to requirements in a middle grades, secondary or foreign language education program with in-depth supervised participation in planning, instructing, and assessing student learning.

EDCI 4485. Student Teaching (0-40-10) Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education and Student Teaching. Observation, participation, and instruction in a school classroom in the student's major field. Cooperative supervision by selected classroom teachers and college faculty. (Course fee required.) (S/U grading)

EDCI 4698. Teaching Internship (0-40-3) Prerequisite: Admission to the Internship Program. An internship experience for provisionally certified teachers seeking initial certification in Georgia. Cooperative supervision and evaluation from university and school district personnel. Successful completion of two semesters of internship required.

EDCI 4795. Student Teaching Seminar (1-0-1) Co-requisite: EDCI 4485, ARTE 4485, PELM 4485, or SPED 4485. Discussion of common problems encountered in student teaching conducted in a seminar setting.

EDCI 5000. Field Experience (0-0-0) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program or department approval. Documentation of 400 hours of field experience dispersed throughout existing education courses and non-credit field experiences. Samples of productivity, logs, and journals to be submitted prior to student teaching.

EDCI 5555. Selected Topics in Curriculum and Instruction (1-3) Selected topics in curriculum and instruction. Course may be taken three times for credit when topics differ.

EDCI 6115. NBPTS Precandidacy: Understanding the Process and Principles (3-0-3) Prerequisites: A baccalaureate degree; minimum of three years teaching experience; valid state teaching certificate; currently employed as a teacher or has contact with classes in the public schools. Review of National Board Principles and the National Board assessment process. Analysis of professional literature related to certification specialty area. Introduction to teaching portfolio requirements.

EDCI 6116. NBPTS Candidacy: Preparation and Documentation (3-0-3) Prerequisites: Completion of EDCI 6115; a baccalaureate degree; minimum of three years teaching experience; valid state teaching certificate; currently employed as a teacher or has contact with classes in the public schools. Reflection on the implementation of standards of excellence in the classroom and within the teaching profession. Development and completion of teaching portfolio. Preparation of materials for assessment center activities.

EDCI 6118. Teaching Composition in Grades 4-12 (3-0-3) Curriculum and methods for teaching writing in grades 4-12, with analysis of NCTE/IRA Standards. Focus on the teacher as writer using the workshop approach.

EDCI 6158. Trends and Issues in Middle Grades and Secondary Education (2-0-2) A survey of contemporary trends and issues affecting middle-grades and secondary curriculum and teaching. Consideration of school reform, technology, multi cultural/global perspectives, national standards, and inclusion.

EDCI 6159. Integrating Multicultural/Global Studies Throughout the Curriculum (3-0-3) An examination and study of literature, curricula, and psychological issues that recognize and appreciate ethnic differences within an education setting.

EDCI 6225. Foundations of Education - American Education (2-0-2) Prerequisite: College Baccalaureate degree in an area certifiable by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, or in a related field. This course is part of the non-traditional M.Ed. and teacher certification programs. An examination of contemporary American education and issues, such as motives for teaching, the challenges of teaching, ethical and legal issues in education today, and creating a community of learners.

EDCI 6226. Foundations of Education - Instructional Applications (0-4-2) Prerequisite: College Baccalaureate degree in an area certifiable by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, or in a related field. This course is part of the non-traditional M.Ed. and teacher certification programs. Students will become familiar with several methods and strategies for planning lessons and units of study and will then develop units and lessons in their content area. This course contains a 40-hour field experience (20 hours in general education and 20 hours in special education).

EDCI 6227. Foundations of Education - Human Development, Motivation, and Learning (2-0-2) Prerequisite: College Baccalaureate degree in an area certifiable by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, or in a related field. This course is part of the non-traditional M.Ed. and teacher certification programs. The interrelationships between human development, teaching and learning, including stage theories of development and age characteristics of learners, understanding cultural diversity and socioeconomic differences, motivation and classroom management.

EDCI 6228. Foundations of Education - Special Education (3-0-3) Prerequisite: College Baccalaureate degree in an area certifiable by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, or in a related field. This course is part of the non-traditional M.Ed. and teacher certification programs. Defining special education, inclusion, collaboration, students with mental retardation, students with learning disabilities, students with emotional or behavior disorders and transition of special education students to adulthood.

EDCI 6235. Space Science Methods, Grades 4-12 (2-2-3) Curriculum design, implementation strategies, and selection of materials for space science (selected topics). Emphasis on science processes and recommendations from national curriculum movements for grades 4-12.

EDCI 6255. Teacher Inquiry and Investigation (1-2-2) Prerequisite or Co-requisite: EDCI 6158. An individualized inquiry, paper of reflection, or action research project on an approved topic related to the student's level or content specialty. Presentation at graduate symposium or to other professional audience.

EDCI 6455. Practicum in History Education (1-3) Prerequisite: Admission to M.Ed. or Ed.S. programs. A field experience with supervised participation in planning, instructing, and assessing student learning.

EDCI 6485. Student Teaching (0-40-10) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. An intensified learning experience consisting of observation, participation, and instruction in a school classroom in the student's major field. Cooperative supervision by selected classroom teachers and college faculty. (Course fee required.) (S/U grading)

EDCI 6599. Directed Studies in Education (1-3) Prerequisite: Approval of Department Chair. An intensive study of some aspect of teaching and learning. Course may be taken two times for credit when areas of study differ.

EDCI 6698. Teaching Internship (1-6) Prerequisite: Approval of Department Chair. An internship for working teachers establishing credit for initial certification in Georgia. Outcomes-based assessment and portfolio development.  May be repeated for a total of 24 hours credit.  (Course fee required.)

EDCI 6795. Student Teaching Seminar (1-0-1) Co-requisite: EDCI 6485 and/or SPED 6485 and/or EDUF 6125. Students will discuss various issues encountered in student teaching. The class is conducted in a seminar setting.

EDCI 6796. Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program Seminar (3-0-3) This course provides an introduction to the teaching profession. The responsibilities of the educator are organized based on the four domains of the Model of Appropriate Practice (MAP). These include Planning and Preparation, Classroom Environment, Instruction and Professional Responsibilities.

EDCI 7115. K-12 Curriculum Studies: English Language Arts (3-0-3) Curriculum theory, design, and evaluation in English language arts, K-12. Analysis of NCTE/IRA Standards and model curricula.

EDCI 7158. Leadership in the Curriculum Change Process (2-0-2) Prerequisite: EDUF 7116. A consideration of the curriculum process related to providing leadership in planned curriculum change. The course leads to producing a proposal for the specialist project.

EDCI 7359. Specialist Project (0-4-2) Prerequisite: EDCI 7158. A capstone course through which candidates demonstrate their knowledge, problem-solving, and leadership skills. (S/U grading.)
